Biography and Research Information
OverviewAI-generated summary
Dr. Jonathan Laryea's research focuses on the study of colorectal cancer, including its risk factors, detection, and treatment outcomes. He investigates the association between environmental exposures, such as pesticide exposure, and the incidence of colorectal cancer, as detailed in his systematic review. His work also examines dietary factors, including choline and B-vitamin intake, in relation to colorectal cancer risk.
Dr. Laryea's clinical research explores different management strategies for colorectal conditions, such as comparing surgical versus non-surgical approaches for malignant bowel obstruction. He is also involved in studies assessing the impact of surgical techniques, like minimally invasive approaches, on patient outcomes, particularly in those with functional limitations. His scholarship extends to global health, with publications addressing surgery as a global health need and the establishment of colorectal surgery fellowships in regions with growing demand, such as Ghana.
His research group at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences collaborates with colleagues including Mario Schootman, Chenghui Li, Ping-Ching Hsu, and Eryn K. Matich. Dr. Laryea's expertise is further demonstrated by his board certifications in general surgery, colorectal surgery, and clinical informatics, as well as his Master's degree in Biomedical Informatics. He holds the Nolie & Norma Mumey Endowed Chair in Surgery and serves as the Vice Chair for Quality for the Department of Surgery.
Research Overview
Dr. Jonathan A. Laryea is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He is the Vice Chair for Quality for the Department of Surgery. He holds the Nolie & Norma Mumey Endowed Chair in Surgery. He completed his medical training at the University of Ghana Medical School in 1998. He completed an additional semester of research training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Afterwards, he completed his internal medicine internship and general surgery residency at a Yale University Affiliate, Waterbury Hospital Health Center in Waterbury, Connecticut. Before joining UAMS, Dr. Laryea also completed a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Georgia Colon and Rectal Surgery Clinic in Atlanta. Dr. Laryea is board certified in general surgery, colorectal surgery, and clinical informatics. He also has a Master’s degree in Biomedical Informatics. He is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of Black Colon & Rectal Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, and the West African College of Surgeons. Dr. Laryea is the Division Chief of Colorectal Surgery and he is the Medical Director of the Cancer Service Line at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. His clinical interests are in minimally invasive surgery including advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery for colorectal cancer and other colorectal diseases. His research interests include racial disparities, biomedical informatics, and machine learning/artificial intelligence. Dr. Laryea has a passion for Medical Missions/Global Surgery. He has multiple engagements in Liberia, Nigeria, Ghana, and other African countries, where he not only gives free surgical care but also teaches surgeons and trainees various techniques of surgery.
