OverviewAI-generated summary

Dr. Jonathan A. Laryea, Professor of Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), holds the Nolie & Norma Mumey Endowed Chair in Surgery and serves as the Vice Chair for Quality for the Department of Surgery. His clinical and research interests focus on colorectal surgery, with a particular emphasis on the study of colorectal cancer.

Dr. Laryea's research has investigated the association between environmental factors, such as pesticide exposure and dietary intake of choline and B-vitamins, and the risk and incidence of colorectal cancer. He has also explored disparities in colorectal cancer survival related to socioeconomic factors and the impact of surgical approaches on patient outcomes, including those with functional limitations. His work includes comparative effectiveness trials comparing surgical and non-surgical management for malignant bowel obstruction.

His academic background includes medical training at the University of Ghana Medical School, research training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and residency at Waterbury Hospital Health Center, a Yale University Affiliate. He completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Georgia Colon and Rectal Surgery Clinic. Dr. Laryea holds a Master’s degree in Biomedical Informatics and is board certified in general surgery, colorectal surgery, and clinical informatics. He has published 54 papers, with 467 citations and an h-index of 12. He leads a research group and collaborates with colleagues at UAMS, including Mario Schootman, Chenghui Li, Ping-Ching Hsu, and Eryn K. Matich.
